  2. Thanks for taking the time to reflect on your barefoot running experience and succinctly capturing the important steps folks must take. I agree that going slowly and listening to your feet are of the utmost importance. I am a huge believer in barefoot running (or with minimal shoes like VFFs) yet due to a herniated disc and recently back surgery to take care of it, I actually haven’t been able to run barefoot yet! I most certainly will be better off for having read your guidelines. Thanks!

Oh, and I list a few more alternative/minimal/barefoot shoe options on my blog (www.runningquest.net) which your readers might find helpful.

    Thanks again!

  3. This is wonderful information! Thanks.

I’m a 61 year old woman and I’ve been run/walking barefoot for years. I gave up shoes 5 years ago when I realized that despite thousands of dollars invested in special shoes my feet hurt in anything but moccasins.I figured out how to wear moccasins year ’round here in Michigan and my feet have been happy since.

I took up running at the “Y” because they have a nice cushioned track and I like the window views. I do use the aqua sox and five fingers when I run on pavement and they work nicely.

I also have two pairs of moccasins that I use for running outside. I make my own, using the styles of the Anishinaabe people who have walked and run around here successfully for hundreds of years. I now have moccasins that coordinate with every outfit and for every occasion. The sheer enjoyment of fully functioning feet that spring and move as I walk and run and dance is amazing. I heartily suggest we all give up shoes entirely.

  4. Marsha and Clynton: Thank you for taking the time to comment. I find it inspiring to hear the stories of those who have shun the “new” traditional approach and have found results and comfort in real tradition.

I will have to lookup the Anishinaabe moccasin. Marsha if you have any more details on that, I’d love to hear them.

  5. Rob,

Marsha is the one who made my moccasins which I wear all the time now. My legs were really sore the first few days I wore them from different muscle usage but I think they are improving my posture and walking style.

You can see a photo on my Facebook Wall Photos album.
