		<description>Very interesting. I appreciate the comments.  I ended up getting a pair of decent fitting gel gloves.  They aren't too overpowering but add enough to get the job done.

As for the panniers, I will have to check that option out. Thanks!</description>

		<description>You may have looked at them already, but I like using water-resistant &lt;a href="http://www.axiomgear.com/bags_panniers/kootenay.php" rel="nofollow"&gt;panniers&lt;/A&gt; instead of a backpack; they're more comfortable, and they keep your center of gravity lower. On the down side, they're about $120 ($90 for the panniers, $30 for a rear mounting rack), and they'll add weight to your bike. There are many different styles/colors; they usually come in pairs, but there are also single bags. Put plastic bags inside them if you need to keep the contents totally dry.

If you can't find decent "real" biking gloves, I've found that fingerless &lt;a href="http://www.tackletour.com/reviewkenai200.html" rel="nofollow"&gt;fishing gloves&lt;/A&gt; work well, with textured "rubber" (neoprene) for padding and grip on the palms, and fleece on the top. 

Fenders are my favorite.
